800 Million Weekly Users?! ChatGPT Just Redefined “Explosive Growth”
Just a couple of months ago, I reported that ChatGPT had crossed 100 million new weekly users between December and February. That was already staggering — more than the entire population of the UK jumping online with AI in a matter of weeks.
But while I was off-grid on a family adventure along the West Coast of America (which I highly recommend, by the way), ChatGPT pulled off something even wilder.
Between February and April 2025, another 400 million weekly active users joined the platform. That’s not a typo - we’re now looking at 800 million weekly active users. That’s more than double the population of the entire United States.

So, What on Earth Happened in Just a Few Weeks?
Even for those of us living and breathing this stuff, the speed of change is getting hard to keep up with. While I was hiking canyons and exploring diners, OpenAI was casually dropping some of the most powerful updates in ChatGPT’s history. Here’s a quick round-up:
🔥 The Big Shifts Since February:
- ChatGPT-4o (Omni) is now the default for all users — replacing the legacy 4 model completely by April 30th.
- Multimodal brilliance: 4o unifies text, image, and audio processing, allowing for smoother, more human-like interactions across formats.
- Real-time voice conversations: We’re talking ~232ms response time, with emotional detection and expressive voice replies — this is not your average voice assistant.
- 25,000-word context window: Hugely useful for extended workflows and coaching-style conversations.
- Image generation tool went viral and drove a huge wave of engagement — rightfully so, it’s wildly creative.
- Memory is now smarter: It can access all your previous chats, making your assistant genuinely personal.
- New mini-models (o3, o4-mini, o4-mini-high) are now supercharged for speed and logic, and can autonomously combine tools like search, vision, code, and image generation.
- Desktop App Integration: Now working directly with tools like Visual Studio Code to actually edit content, not just suggest changes.
Oh, and ChatGPT-4.1 is quietly out in the wild for API developers — a slight but important evolution on 4o.
ChatGPT Isn’t Just Growing — It’s Dominating
Let’s zoom out for a second. Right now, ChatGPT owns 59.2% of the AI Search Market. Its closest rival? Microsoft Copilot, sitting at just 14.4%. That’s not just a lead — it’s an entirely different playing field.
Add to that the recent unconfirmed-but-likely Shopify integration leaks, and it’s clear OpenAI is coming for every touchpoint of the digital economy - e-commerce, content creation, dev workflows, education, and more.
